WEEKLY TITELLIGENCE SUTARY NO. 7.

JAPANESE

(i) A total of 271 JAPANESE are now under arrest as suspected war criminals. 262 of these are Gendarmes (officers 9, Warrant officers 16, other ranks 237) and the remaining 9 camp staff, judicial staff etc. en evidence collected to date, specific crimes can be attributed to 10 of the suspects. A further 11 Gendarmes are in hospital and have not yet been arrested.

(ii) The two Gendarmes who escaped from SHALSHUIPO on 26th October have so far not been recaptured. The Gendarme reported in Weekly Intelligence Summary No. 6 as having been recaptured has not yet been satisfactorily identified.

(iii) It is anticipated that by 10th November the transfer of JAPANESE civilians to STANLEY will have been completed, saring leaving 2,000 Formosans and Koreans still in WITFIELD Barracks. It is hoped to clear MITFIELD entirely by moving these 2,000 persons to ARGYLE Street, provided a further move of JAPANESE from the latter address can be arranged.

(iv) It is understood that the recent order by the General Officer Comanding, HONG KONG, on the subject of treatment of JAPANESE prisoners of war, has resulted in the cessation of complaints by the JAPANESE, who now appear satisfied.

(v) On 5th November, five suspected FORMOSANS were appre- hended by Commandos at SAI KUNC in the NEW TERRITORIES. They were sent to KO LOON Police Station for interrogation, the results of which satisfied the police that there were no grounds for holding them and they were accordingly released. Before the war they were all five in the employ of the CHUNGWA Book Company, KOWLOON. When arrested at SAI KUNG they were on a farxxxing expedition for food.

CHINESE.

(1) Arrangements have been made for the remainder of the armed CHINESE guerillas to evacuate LANTAO Island by junks to SHA TAU KOK between 6th and 8th November. A force of Commandos will then carry out a search of the island with a view to rounding up possible stragglers and collecting any arms or equipment left behind by the guerillas.

(ii)

The disposition of the Chinese 8th Army was as follows on 5th November:

KOWLOON

SHAN CHUN

Army H.C. and the 308th Reginent of the 103rd Division.

103rd Division (less 308th Regiment) and Honourable 1st Division,

CANTON

A

166th Division.

The 4,000 troops who had arrived in KOWLOON by that date belonged to the 103rd Division, having come from CANTON in a succession of junks which also brought their equipment.

All personnel of the Eth Army are being staged in GARDEN City, KO LOON, prior to their embarkation for the North.

(iii) Flag Officers of the Chinese Navy, and their respective areas of command, are known to be as follows:-
